A. Studying Interior Architecture in 2013 as a first year university student, I were given
a brief to produce a restaurant for Heston Blumenthal. I wanted to focus on
Heston’s ability manipulates one’s senses through his dishes. He mentions that senses
develop through one’s lifetime in which they are linked to a specific memories.
For instance, Heston produced tomatoes as sausages, Nutella as black pudding
and baked beans as potatoes, twisting the perspective of an ordinary breakfast.
Hence, in my interior the restaurant is divided into three sections,
representing ‘time capsules’. As diners engage in their food they are able to
draw from their memories through senses which may not correspond, emphasizing
Heston’s manipulation. This is reflected in the interior where the walls and
ceiling are visually disjointed with the use of light, the frosted glass to
portray moving silhouettes and, the emphasis on linearity and repetition.
B. Mt Rokko Observatory designed by Hiroshi Sambuichi is inspired by natural
elements of air, wind and water. The building has its different effects
depending on the seasons. This is evident where during the winter period, the
cold temperatures react with water in which frost is formed in the empty
hexagonal frames. The building appears to be covered with frosted leaves. There
is also a temperature control system where a large wooden tunnel connect either
water or ice depending on the season. Water collected during the warmer seasons
are collected during winter where ice is collected and stored to keep the
observatory cool during summer.
